Project recovery

GETTING PROJECTS BACK ON TRACK AND SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED

Complex projects regularly fail to go to plan, leading to significant delays and cost blow-outs. Whilst existing teams can sometimes successfully turn these projects around, often a new or extended leadership capability is needed to take stock of the situation; create a realistic approach and plan, and; execute on the plan to completion. This typically includes a focus on re-engaging with stakeholders, ensuring the correct governance structure and processes are in place for quick decision-making and bringing the necessary skills to the team to get the project back on track and deliver the expected outcomes.

Whilst a broad range of factors can cause projects to go off-track or stall, in our experience, common causes tend to be centred on one or more of the following:

  • Poor scope management

  • Ineffective governance

  • Project leadership/team lack the experience/maturity for project complexity

  • Insufficient involvement of stakeholders with appropriate authority and/or subject matter expertise

  • Inadequate focus on change impacts and change management activities, including communication.

Our experienced program managers, change practitioners and analysts have been on the ‘front-line’ in delivering complex projects for many years, with our senior consultants regularly brought in to failed projects to help get them back on track and successfully implemented.

Project recovery at a major university

Mozaic were engaged by the university to turn around a failing program of work to deliver a critical new research platform and related projects.
